Teacher tip

Teacher tip: use 'a' before a singular noun that starts with a consonant sound (a boy, a cake, a dog, a fire, a goal, a unit), and 'an' before a singular noun that starts with a vowel sound (an apple, an egg, an igloo, an owl, an umbrella, an exit). Neither is used before uncountable or plural nouns. The rule follows the sound of the next word, not its spelling.
